Rhinoplasty Cost in Sydney: Fees, Medicare and Payment Plans Explained

Quick answer: A rhinoplasty quote in Sydney is not a single number. It is four separate fees: the surgeon, the anaesthetist, the hospital or day facility, and follow up care. Purely cosmetic rhinoplasty attracts no Medicare rebate and generally no private health fund contribution. Where there is a genuine functional problem, such as an obstructed airway from a deviated septum, part of the procedure may attract a Medicare item number, which changes both the rebate and your health fund’s willingness to contribute to the hospital component. Eligibility is assessed at consultation against defined criteria and cannot be confirmed in advance from a website.

What makes up a rhinoplasty quote?

Ask for the quote itemised. If you receive one number with no breakdown, you cannot compare it to anything.

Surgeon’s fee. Varies with the complexity of the operation. A primary rhinoplasty in a straightforward nose costs less than one that requires cartilage grafting, and revision surgery on a previously operated nose is the most demanding of the three.

Anaesthetist’s fee. Billed separately by the anaesthetist, generally by theatre time.

Hospital or day facility fee. Covers theatre, staffing, consumables and any overnight stay. Also driven by time.

Follow up care. Post operative reviews, splint removal, dressings. Ask what is included and for how long.

Two items are frequently omitted from headline pricing and then appear later: the cost of any revision, and the cost of imaging or specialist opinions such as an ENT assessment where airway function is in question. Current fee bands are published on the practice pricing page and the procedure itself is described on our page covering rhinoplasty surgery with Dr Kevin Ho.

Why do rhinoplasty quotes vary so widely between surgeons?

Four legitimate reasons, and one that is not.

Complexity. Reduction of a dorsal hump is a different operation from correcting a twisted nose or rebuilding a collapsed nasal valve. The second and third take longer and often require grafting.

Primary versus revision. Operating on a nose that has been operated on before means scarred tissue, unpredictable planes and frequently a shortage of cartilage, which may need to be harvested from the ear or rib. Revision surgery is typically the most expensive rhinoplasty for that reason.

Where the operation is performed. A fully accredited private hospital with an overnight bed costs more than a day facility. That difference is not padding, it reflects the level of care available if something goes wrong.

Who is operating. A specialist plastic surgeon holding FRACS has completed accredited surgical training in the specialty. Fees differ across practitioners with different training pathways, which is one of several reasons to read the difference between a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon before comparing prices.

The reason that is not legitimate: a quote that looks materially cheaper because it excludes the anaesthetist, the facility, or the revision policy. That is not a lower price, it is a shorter list.

When does Medicare apply to nasal surgery?

Purely cosmetic rhinoplasty, performed to change the appearance of the nose, does not attract a Medicare rebate.

Functional nasal surgery is assessed differently. Where a deviated septum, internal valve collapse or a nasal fracture is causing a documented airway obstruction, that functional component may attract a Medicare item number, subject to the criteria for that item being met and documented. Where an item number applies, the hospital component may also be claimable against private health insurance depending on your level of cover and any waiting periods.

Two practical points. First, a combined procedure is common: the functional part may attract an item number while the cosmetic part does not, and your quote should show which is which. Second, your health fund, not the surgeon, decides what it will pay. Ask your fund for a written estimate quoting the item numbers on your surgeon’s quote, and ask about waiting periods and any exclusions.

Are payment plans available for rhinoplasty?

Medical finance and payment plan arrangements exist in Australia and some practices work with third party providers. What matters is reading the terms rather than the monthly figure: the interest rate, the total amount repayable, establishment and ongoing fees, and what happens if your surgery date changes.

Under advertising rules for regulated health services, a practice cannot offer inducements to undergo surgery, and finance should never be presented as a reason to proceed. It is a payment mechanism for a decision you have already made on clinical grounds.

What does the cost not buy you?

A quote does not buy a guaranteed result. Rhinoplasty is one of the more technically demanding operations in plastic surgery, healing is unpredictable, and swelling in the nasal tip can take twelve months or longer to fully settle.

Risks include bleeding, infection, breathing difficulty, altered sensation, asymmetry, irregularity of the nasal contour, septal perforation, scarring at the columella in an open approach, adverse reaction to anaesthesia, and the need for revision surgery. A proportion of patients require a secondary procedure, and you should ask your surgeon directly what their policy is on the fees for that.

Disclaimer: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

How should I compare two rhinoplasty quotes?

Put them side by side against the same five questions. Are all four fee components listed? Is the operation the same operation, primary or revision, open or closed, with or without grafting? Where is it being performed, and is that facility accredited? What is included in follow up, and for how long? What is the written revision policy?

If one quote answers all five and the other answers two, you are not comparing prices. Balance and proportion matter more than a single measurement, which is the point of planning surgery around facial harmony.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a nose job cost in Sydney?

There is no single figure, because the operation varies from a straightforward dorsal reduction to a complex revision requiring rib cartilage. Fee bands are published on the pricing page and an accurate quote follows an examination.

Is rhinoplasty covered by private health insurance?

Generally only where a Medicare item number applies to a functional component, and then only for the hospital portion, subject to your level of cover and waiting periods. Confirm in writing with your fund.

Is revision rhinoplasty more expensive?

Usually, because scarred tissue is harder to work with and grafting is often required.

How long is recovery?

A splint is typically worn for around a week and most people take one to two weeks away from work. Residual swelling in the tip settles over many months.

Can I get a quote over the phone?

General fee ranges yes, a personal quote no. Complexity determines theatre time, and complexity requires examination.

The only way to know what your rhinoplasty will cost is an assessment that establishes what operation you actually need, and whether any part of it is functional. You can book a consultation or contact the practice.
