Mastopexy

Mastopexy or breastlift is the procedure used to address significant drooping of the breast (also known as ptosis). This commonly occurs after pregnancy and breastfeeding or with age. It is a product of loss of breast volume as well as breast support.

When there has been a marked degree of volume loss such that even a breast lift does not provide the desired breast size, an implant may also be required. This procedure is called mastopexy augmentation.

Although both procedures do not involve removal of breast tissue other than excess skin, the underlying longevity of the procedure lies in reshaping the underlying breast mound such that it creates more support to withstand gravity and aging. Just addressing the skin to be tighter is a very temporary and in my view, inadequate technique.

The incisions required are similar to breast reduction surgery – either just an incision around the nipple with a vertical extension or an added horizontal extension in the breast fold. Which technique offers you the optimal, safest outcome will be discussed at the initial consultation.

Risks

Risks are general to any procedure and specific to mastopexy. I will go through these with you in detail based on your individual risk profile. This will also be included in your surgery pack that will be provided after your initial consultation.

Recovery

Recovery on average is one week and the dressings stay on during this time. Most non-impact exercise and swimming can resume at 2-3 weeks. A light support bra without wires is essential in the first 6 weeks (either a medical garment we can arrange or a simple sportsbra). Contact sports and bras with wires are allowed at 6 weeks.

The total cost of the procedure (surgeon, anaesthetist, hospital fees, garment) and any rebates you may be entitled will be calculated for you after your initial consultation. Post-operative consultations are not charged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Breast Reduction

A breast lift repositions sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening tissue, creating a lifted, youthful contour.

Candidates typically have sagging due to age, weight changes, or pregnancy and are in overall good health.

While a lift changes shape and position, size remains similar unless combined with augmentation or reduction.

Recovery generally requires rest for a few weeks, with personalised care instructions provided by Dr Ho.

Results are long-lasting, though aging and lifestyle factors can affect appearance over time.
