There are two main types of volume fillers: synthetic and your body’s own fat (fat grafting). They can be used superficially to alleviate permanent wrinkle lines or deep to enhance volume.

Synthetic products

I use fillers that are based on components normally found in skin. They are commonly used for permanent wrinkle lines around the brow, lips and mouth. As a volume enhancer, they may help fill deep tear troughs or add fullness to lips. Their effect lasts 6-24 months depending on site and product used.

Time:

The initial consultation and injection takes about 1 hour. It is performed in the consulting rooms.

Recovery:

If local anaesthetic is needed, the anaesthetic effect will wear off within 4 hours. Sometimes there is mild redness at the injection sites that wears off within 1-2 hours. You may apply make-up immediately to conceal this if you wish. Some swelling may be associated with the injection sites for the first two weeks (if I feel this is likely to be obvious, we will do two conservative injecting sessions spaced two weeks apart).

Cost:

Initial consultation is $350 plus product cost. Subsequent top up consultations are not charged if I am injecting the same areas as your initial consultation – you are only charged the product cost.

Fat Grafting

Using your own body’s fat is a more permanent volume filler. It relies on removing fat by liposuction (usually from the abdomen), extracting pure fat cells, which are then injected into the desired area for volume enhancement. Its permanency depends on the body’s capacity to integrate the new pure fat cells over absorbing them. As such, sometimes it is necessary to top up a graft (at a second procedure) to achieve a balanced result. Fat grafting is particularly effective in facial regions such as lips, cheeks, eyelids and tear troughs.

Time:

Usually about 1 hour.

Hospitalisation:

A day only procedure without the need for overnight hospitalisation

Recovery:

There is usually a little swelling, which lasts on average 2 weeks. Bruising is less common and if present, resolves within the same time.

Risks:

Risks are general to any procedure and specific to fat grafting. I will go through these with you in detail based on your individual risk profile. This will also be included in your surgery pack that will be provided after your initial consultation.

Cost:

The total cost of the fat grafting procedure (surgeon, anaesthetist, hospital fees) and any rebates you may be entitled will be calculated for you after your initial consultation. Post-operative consultations are not charged.
