Better known by its common commercial names, an anti-wrinkle injection is a purified, medical preparation of a protein that blocks muscle contraction. It has been used for decades to treat muscle spasms. In cosmetic plastic surgery, it has a primary role in modifying over-contracting muscles of the face that cause excessive wrinkles or stern facial expression. It can also be used for the treatment of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and migraine.
The skill in administering anti-wrinkle injections for facial rejuvenation is founded on a precise understanding of the underlying anatomy of facial musculature and its relations. This not only allows a plastic surgeon to weaken an over-contracting muscle but to allow its antagonist muscle groups to have positive effect. This balance allows for modifying shape or creating symmetry of facial structures such as eyebrows whilst performing its primary role of weakening muscles that cause unwanted wrinkles without creating a frozen expression. Depending on the location injected, the effect of these injections can last 4-10 months. Given its mode of action, effectiveness and excellent safety profile, injections may be repeated. The effect of anti-wrinkle injections is evident within two weeks of injection, however most patients see it within 72 hours. There are no documented long-term detrimental effects.
In hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), these injections block the nerves that supply the sweat glands. It is a very effective treatment for areas such as the armpits, palms, and soles of the feet and their effect may be up to 10 months. A general anaesthetic is required as a day only procedure if the injection is for hyperhidrosis of the hands or feet. Armpits are done with topical cream anaesthetic in the rooms. In migraine patients, Botox can alleviate tension headaches that originate in the muscles of the brow, temple or neck regions. Their effect can last 6-8 months.
