Otoplasty

Otoplasty is the term used to describe surgery to improve the shape of ears. It is a common procedure performed in both children and adults.

In children, otoplasty is usually for prominent ears that not only require reduction and pinning back but also reshaping of features that are distorted or absent from birth. In adults, otoplasty is often performed for individuals who regret not having had the procedure in their childhood as well as for acquired disorders such as trauma in later life.

The incision for otoplasty is hidden behind the ear in the groove between the ear and scalp. My technique for reshaping the ear is a combination of weakening the abnormal memory in the cartilage of the ear by abrasion (rather than cutting which is potentially more destructive) and stabilising the new desired appearance with sutures. I tend to avoid cartilage destruction techniques so that the newly shaped ear has smooth contours like a normal, natural ear.

Otoplasty

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, reshapes or repositions the ears to reduce prominence and improve symmetry. Often performed on children and adults, this surgery addresses issues like protruding or misshapen ears, helping create a more balanced, natural appearance. The procedure is tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy and desired outcomes, ensuring a personalised approach.

Ideal candidates include children over five or adults with prominent ears or asymmetry affecting confidence. Good candidates are in overall good health, have realistic expectations, and seek to enhance ear proportions for more harmonious facial balance. Dr Ho assesses each case to determine the most suitable approach.

Recovery from otoplasty generally involves one to two weeks with minimal discomfort. Patients often wear a supportive headband to protect the ears during healing, and Dr Ho provides detailed aftercare instructions. Swelling and bruising gradually diminish, and many return to routine activities within a few weeks, with results improving as healing completes.

It depends on your specific concerns. A consultation with Dr. Kevin Ho can help determine the best procedure for you.

Yes, otoplasty results are generally permanent, offering long-term correction for ear prominence or asymmetry. Once fully healed, results are stable, creating a balanced ear shape that endures. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and following Dr Ho’s aftercare advice supports optimal, lasting outcomes.
